South Coast Railway’s Vijayawada division loaded its first freight rake of imported wood pulp on September 19, 2026, moving the cargo from Kakinada Port (Andhra Pradesh) to Bhigwan in Maharashtra. The shift followed inclusion of wood pulp in the rail goods tariff (Class-110) after a proposal to the Railway Board, enabling diversion of this traffic from road to rail.
Why it matters
It creates a new rail freight lane for wood pulp from Kakinada, potentially shifting long-haul pulp movement from road to rail and enabling additional freight volumes and revenue.
