First phase of Poola Subbaiah Veligonda irrigation project inaugurated; water released

The first phase of the Poola Subbaiah Veligonda irrigation project was inaugurated at Gantavanipalli (Dornala mandal) on August 31, 2026, and Krishna water was released from the Srisailam reservoir into Nallamala Sagar. The report says about 10.70 tmc ft of water is being released, providing irrigation to around 1.19 lakh acres and drinking water to about 4 lakh people in parts of Prakasam, Nellore and Kadapa districts.
Why it matters
Releasing Krishna water into the project’s storage and canal system enables a new irrigation and drinking-water supply source for drought-prone areas that have faced inadequate rainfall and groundwater issues.
