Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh6 Oct 2026
The Indian Navy’s first indigenously built Fleet Support Ship (FSS-1) named ‘Surya’ was launched at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam on October 6, 2026. At the same ceremony, the keel for the fifth ship in the series (FSS-5) was laid, and HSL inaugurated a newly modernised Slipway No. 4 and a 300-tonne Goliath crane, according to HSL.
Why it matters
Launching a fleet support ship increases India’s ability to refuel and resupply naval vessels at sea, extending operational endurance without returning to port.
