Researchers report rediscovery of endemic plant Rungia mastersii in Assam

Researchers from Assam University, Silchar report rediscovering the endemic plant species Rungia mastersii in the Jatinga Hills, Dima Hasao district, Assam, about 180 years after its first recorded discovery in 1845. Their July 2026 study documents the identification based on field collection and morphological investigation, and notes only about 40–42 individuals observed at a single site.
Why it matters
This adds current scientific evidence that the species still survives in the wild and supports targeted surveys and monitoring to reduce extinction risk from its very small, concentrated population.
