Methanol barge departs Bogibeel (Dibrugarh) for Dhaka, starting international cargo route

Dibrugarh, Assam5 Oct 2026

A barge carrying 540 metric tonnes of methanol departed the Bogibeel inland waterway terminal in Dibrugarh, Assam for Dhaka, Bangladesh on October 5, 2026, via National Waterway-2 on the Brahmaputra and the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route. The cargo was methanol produced by Assam Petro-Chemicals Ltd (APCL) at Namrup, and the shipment followed the setting up of customs and immigration complexes at Bogibeel and Dhubri, according to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

Why it matters

The voyage operationally demonstrates an inland-waterway export corridor from Upper Assam to Bangladesh, which could enable regular cross-border freight movement from the Northeast via National Waterway-2 if commercially viable.
