Assam Forest Department and WWF-India published GPS-collared elephant tracking report
Guwahati, Assam6 Oct 2026
The Assam Forest Department and WWF-India released a report, ‘Tracking the Giants: Movement and Habitat-Use Patterns of GPS-Collared Elephants in Assam’, based on satellite tracking conducted between April 2021 and June 2026 in Udalguri, Sonitpur and Biswanath districts. The study collected over 38,000 GPS locations from four female-led herds and a solitary male, providing high-resolution data on seasonal elephant movement across forests, tea plantations, agricultural areas and riverine habitats.
Why it matters
The dataset and report provide baseline movement and habitat-use evidence that authorities can use to plan protection measures and reduce human–elephant conflict in high-conflict areas.
