IIT Guwahati and IIT Kharagpur develop ultrathin device combining visual sensing, memory and processing
Guwahati, Assam12 Oct 2026
Researchers from IIT Guwahati, collaborating with IIT Kharagpur, reported developing an ultrathin light-sensitive electronic device that integrates visual sensing, memory retention and information processing on a single platform. In laboratory tests, they reported the device used 500 times less energy than conventional MXene-based devices, and demonstrated 90% facial-recognition accuracy and 85% traffic scene segmentation accuracy; the findings were published in the journal Carbon.
Why it matters
Integrating sensing, memory and processing into one device could reduce energy use and data-transfer overhead in AI and robotic vision hardware compared with conventional camera–memory–processor architectures.
