India mandates BIS certification for smartphone screen protectors from April 1, 2027

India has notified that smartphone screen protectors will be brought under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021, requiring mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification before such products can be sold in India. The notification is dated September 21, 2026, and the requirement takes effect on April 1, 2027 (screen protectors added as the 66th item, conforming to IS 19348:2025).
Why it matters
The change makes quality compliance mandatory for an entire product category in the Indian market, which can reduce sub-standard products and reshape how screen protectors are manufactured and sold domestically.
