The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved eight Indian Railways multitracking projects across nine states with a total investment of about ₹20,804 crore. The projects are planned to add about 1,196 km of additional lines and are targeted for completion by 2029–30, with an expected freight capacity increase of about 74 million tonnes per annum.
Why it matters
If executed as planned, these additional lines can reduce congestion on key routes and expand rail freight capacity, supporting lower logistics costs and shifting more freight from road to rail.
