Three Western Dedicated Freight Corridor sections inaugurated; DFC now fully operational

Three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC)—Sanand (N)-Makarpura, New Umbergaon-New Saphale, and New Saphale-JNPT—totalling 326 route-km and built at a cost of over ₹20,700 crore, were inaugurated on September 8, 2026, according to The Hindu/PTI. The article says that with the commissioning of these sections, the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network is now fully operational across its entire length, and freight train services were to be flagged off from New Sanand (North), New Makarpura, New Umbergaon and New JNPT.
Why it matters
Direct DFC connectivity to JNPT is intended to speed up EXIM cargo movement, improve industrial-to-port links, reduce logistics costs, and decongest Mumbai’s rail network.
