India mandates alternative-fuel facilities at at least every third fuel outlet

India notified a policy in the Gazette on 2026-08-10 mandating that at least every third retail fuel outlet of fuel marketing entities must offer a “new generation alternative fuel” (such as CNG, LNG, biofuels, EV charging or battery swapping) within three years of the outlet’s commissioning. For outlets commissioned between 2019-11-08 and 2026-08-10, entities must report compliance within one month and bridge any shortfall within six months, with a one-time penalty of ₹10 lakh per deficient outlet for non-compliance.
