Food Ministry set sugar sales quota at 26.5 lakh tonnes for September 2026

India’s Food Ministry set the domestic sugar sales quota for September 2026 at 26.5 lakh tonnes, including 13.5 lakh tonnes for the September 16–30 period. The order also required mills to sell at least 40% of their allocation in the first week and dispatch sugar sold from the mill within seven days of sale (as defined by invoice issuance).
Why it matters
By increasing and enforcing monthly release quotas and dispatch timelines, the policy is intended to increase near-term sugar availability in the domestic market and put downward pressure on retail prices ahead of festival-season demand.
