India expanded Open General Export Licence coverage and simplified defence export approvals
The Ministry of Defence said it expanded the Open General Export Licence (OGEL) framework from 41 countries to all countries except sensitive/restricted destinations (including those under UN Security Council sanctions/arms embargoes) and simplified export approvals by consolidating three procedures into a single framework. The changes also extend OGEL validity from two to three years and remove stakeholder consultation requirements for certain exports (including non-lethal items to most destinations, and exports for international tenders and exhibitions).
A broader OGEL and fewer approvals can reduce compliance friction and speed up Indian defence firms’ participation in overseas tenders, exhibitions and export opportunities while retaining safeguards for restricted destinations and sensitive items.
