India notified four ports as ‘mega ports’ under new cargo thresholds

New Delhi, Delhi· company base25 Sept 2026

A central government gazette notification designated Deendayal (Kandla), Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva), Paradip and Mundra ports as ‘mega ports’, introducing this nomenclature for the first time. The status is valid for five years and is tied to throughput thresholds of 150 million metric tonnes annually for bulk ports or 7.5 million TEUs for container ports.

Why it matters

This creates an official category and eligibility benchmark for ports operating at very high throughput, which can affect how ports are classified and managed over the status period.
