Draft National Steel Policy released for public consultation, targeting 604 Mt capacity by 2047

New Delhi, Delhi11 Oct 2026

India released a draft steel policy for public consultation, targeting 604 million metric tonnes of steelmaking capacity by 2047 (from around 220 million tonnes currently), according to the draft document cited in the report. The draft also sets an emissions-intensity goal of about 1.54 tonnes CO2 per tonne of crude steel by 2047 (from 2.54 currently) and outlines plans to secure iron ore and coking coal supplies, including pursuing foreign assets and joint ventures.

Why it matters

If implemented, the policy would guide long-term expansion of steel capacity while setting a lower emissions-intensity trajectory and prioritising access to critical raw materials needed to meet projected demand.
