NII New Delhi study finds RelB can both limit and promote gut inflammation in mice
New Delhi, Delhi19 Oct 2026
Researchers at the National Institute of Immunology (NII), New Delhi, reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that the protein RelB has context-dependent effects in gut immune tissues. Using engineered mice lacking RelB in cells within solitary isolated lymphoid tissues (SILTs), they found loss of RelB led to a near disappearance of sentinel dendritic cells associated with IL-23 signalling, highlighting a potential trade-off for IBD drug approaches that target this pathway.
Why it matters
The findings suggest that therapies aimed at dampening IL-23–linked inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease could also impair gut antimicrobial defence, so treatment strategies may need to account for where and how RelB functions in the gut.
