DoT directs telecom operators to roll out CNAP caller-name display from Nov 1, 2026

15 Oct 2026

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) directed Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea and BSNL to roll out Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) across their service areas from November 1, 2026, enabling caller names to be displayed alongside phone numbers. The direction follows an amendment to the unified licence definition of calling line identification (CLI), also taking effect on November 1, and includes privacy and verification requirements for preferred business caller names.

Why it matters

If implemented as directed, CNAP can help users identify unknown callers and potentially reduce phone-based fraud and spam by adding a name signal to caller identification.
