India allowed early-start sugar mills to sell October output in Oct–Nov 2026

A notification dated 2026-08-14 by the Directorate of Sugar and Vegetable Oils (Department of Food and Public Distribution) said sugar mills that commence production in October 2026 can sell the sugar produced in October during October and November, in addition to the regular quota system referenced in the report. The government also notified that from 2026-09-01 to 2026-11-30, bulk sugar buyers using over 10 tonnes per month cannot hold more than 15 days of stock.
Why it matters
The measure changes near-term domestic sugar market operations by enabling earlier supply release and limiting bulk stockholding, intended to help maintain availability and reduce the likelihood of imports amid rising prices.
