FSSAI proposed front-of-pack red warning labels for foods high in sugar, salt or fat

India’s food regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), proposed front-of-pack warning labels for packaged foods and drinks in a Supreme Court filing. The proposal describes a red-coloured hexagonal label with declarations such as “HIGH FAT”, “HIGH SUGAR”, “HIGH SALT” and/or “HIGHLY SWEETENED BEVERAGE”, to be applied when a product is high in any two or more of saturated fat, sugar or salt; implementation would be phased, with single-ingredient foods exempted.
