India’s first LNG–diesel dual-fuel train flagged off from Sabarmati station
Ahmedabad, Gujarat27 Sept 2026
Indian Railways’ first LNG-powered (dual-fuel LNG–diesel) train was flagged off from Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The project converted two 1,400 HP Driving Power Cars (DPCs) to LNG–diesel dual-fuel systems after completing more than 2,000 km of field trials; Railways said the system can replace up to around 40% of diesel consumption with LNG.
Why it matters
This demonstrates an alternative traction fuel for non-electrified operations, potentially reducing diesel use, fuel costs and emissions while maintaining operational continuity via dual-fuel capability.
