IIT Gandhinagar and BISAG-N demonstrated a 5.56 km free-space QKD link
Gandhinagar, Gujarat28 Sept 2026
On the night of September 27–28, 2026, scientists demonstrated a quantum-secure communication link through open air between IIT Gandhinagar and BISAG-N, using equipment supplied by QNu Labs. The demonstration achieved a reported quantum bit error rate under 5% and generated secure-key material at about 230–260 bits per second, which was used on a BISAG-N cryptographic platform to encrypt and decrypt messages.
Why it matters
A longer-distance free-space QKD demonstration is a step toward practical quantum-secure links between sites without relying on fibre, relevant to future terrestrial and satellite-based secure communications.
