Indian Railways flags off LNG–diesel dual-fuel train from Sabarmati, Gujarat

Sabarmati, Gujarat27 Sept 2026

An LNG-based fuel system was adopted in Driving Power Cars for the first time in Indian Railways, and an LNG–diesel dual-fuel train was flagged off from Sabarmati in Gujarat. The train’s two 1,400 HP Driving Power Cars at the Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot were converted to operate on both fuels; the article says LNG can replace nearly 40% of diesel consumption under the system.

Why it matters

If the dual-fuel system performs as stated, it reduces diesel use and emissions for rail operations without requiring full electrification for the same service.
