Bankers’ Books Evidence Act, 2026 came into force, replacing the 1891 law
1 Oct 2026
India’s Bankers’ Books Evidence Act, 2026 received Presidential assent on 2026-08-13 and came into force on 2026-10-01, replacing the Bankers’ Books Evidence Act, 1891. The new law explicitly recognises banking records kept electronically or digitally (including cloud, backup and disaster-recovery locations) and provides a route for admitting properly certified copies as evidence in courts and other legal forums.
Why it matters
It updates evidentiary rules for banking records so digital and cloud-stored transaction data can be authenticated and used in legal proceedings without relying on paper ledgers or routine in-person bank officer testimony.
