ICMR-led GWAS in India links 21 genetic regions to endometriosis risk

An ICMR-led nationwide genome-wide association study under the ECGRI initiative analysed 2,523 women across 18 centres and reported 21 suggestive genetic regions associated with endometriosis in Indian women, with the strongest signal near the LINC00415/SHISA2 region on chromosome 13. The study was published in the Scientific Reports section of Springer Nature on 2026-09-05 and reported both shared susceptibility patterns with global populations and some population-specific genetic signals in the Indian cohort.
Why it matters
This adds India-specific genomic evidence that can support future risk prediction research (including polygenic risk scores) and potentially earlier recognition of endometriosis in South Asian populations.
