Max permissible speed on Katra–Banihal rail section raised to 100 kmph

Katra, Jammu and Kashmir1 Oct 2026

Indian Railways increased the maximum permissible speed on the 111-km Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–Banihal section from 75 kmph to 100 kmph after prescribed safety requirements were completed and the enhancement was approved by the Railway Ministry. A Vande Bharat Express then successfully tested operations at 100 kmph across the Chenab Railway Bridge and the Anji Khad Railway Bridge on the Northern Railway’s Jammu division.

Why it matters

A higher permitted speed on this key USBRL section can reduce travel times and improve operating efficiency for rail services linking Katra and the Kashmir Valley via Banihal.
