Aditya-L1’s VELC payload produced Doppler velocity images of the solar corona

Bengaluru, Karnataka20 Oct 2026

Scientists at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics generated Doppler velocity images of activity in the solar corona using data from the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC) onboard ISRO’s Aditya-L1 solar mission. The article says these images can help infer the propagation direction of coronal mass ejections along the Sun–Earth line, information described as previously unavailable.

Why it matters

Doppler velocity imaging of the corona can improve understanding of whether solar eruptions are moving toward Earth, supporting better assessment of near-Earth space disruption risk.
