Study using Aditya-L1 data reports pre-flare UV brightenings as potential warning signs

Bengaluru, Karnataka30 Aug 2026

Researchers from the Manipal Centre for Natural Sciences/Manipal Academy of Higher Education and ISRO (with other collaborators) reported that small, short-lived brightenings in the Sun’s atmosphere appear in the hours before major solar flares and cluster near where the flare later occurs. The study used simultaneous ultraviolet and X-ray observations from Aditya-L1 payloads SUIT, SoLEXS and HEL1OS, and found some of the pre-flare transient events had corresponding X-ray signatures consistent with magnetic energy release.

Why it matters

Identifying observable pre-flare signatures could support more reliable solar-flare forecasting and improved space-weather prediction that helps protect satellites and communication systems.
