Kerala to set up 2,000 MWh battery energy storage system at Kayamkulam with NTPC

The Kerala government said it will establish a 2,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Kayamkulam in Alappuzha district in collaboration with NTPC Ltd. The State-run Kerala State Electricity Board is expected to sign an MoU with NTPC Ltd and NTPC Green Energy Limited for the project, to be located on NTPC land at the unused Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Power Plant site.
Why it matters
A grid-scale BESS can help Kerala manage power shortages by storing electricity and supplying it during peak demand or supply shortfalls.
