Kerala submits 9 coastal panchayats for UNESCO ‘Tsunami Ready’ evaluation

Kerala informed the National Tsunami Ready Board (NTRB) that nine coastal panchayats have completed assigned preparedness tasks and are ready for evaluation for possible ‘Tsunami Ready’ recognition by the IOC-UNESCO. NTRB field verification involving INCOIS scientists and NDMA officers is expected, with the assessment process likely in November 2026.
Why it matters
If the panchayats are recognised, it formalises and benchmarks community-level tsunami preparedness measures such as evacuation routes, management plans, and drills.
