Kerala State Biodiversity Board launched a Red List Assessment of Ecosystems project
Kollam, Kerala14 Oct 2026
The Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB) has launched a one-year Red List Assessment of Ecosystems (RLE) project to systematically evaluate ecosystem collapse risks across all 14 districts of Kerala using IUCN-aligned criteria. The project is funded by KSBB and is being jointly executed by the Kerala Forest Research Institute and MES Asmabi College’s Centre for Ecology, Taxonomy, Conservation and Climate Change.
Why it matters
A statewide ecosystem red-listing can generate comparable evidence on which habitats are most at risk, helping shift conservation planning toward landscape-scale management rather than isolated species protection.
