Study reports first complete mitochondrial genome of Kerala’s Malabari goat
Researchers at Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) reported the first complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the Malabari goat, based on whole-genome sequencing data from 20 unrelated female goats sampled across six districts of Kerala. Published in the journal Mammalian Genome, the analysis found close maternal genetic links to goats from Iraq (99.7% sequence identity with Meriz goats) and relationships with goats from Oman, Arabia and Gujarat, supporting the possibility of historic movement along the Indian Ocean Spice Route.
A complete mitochondrial genome reference improves the genetic evidence base for conserving and breeding the Malabari goat and helps clarify the breed’s maternal origins and historical connectivity.
