BRIC-RGCB developed peptide nanopore sensors to detect Parkinson’s-linked biomarkers

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala22 Sept 2026

BRIC–Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (BRIC-RGCB) researchers in Thiruvananthapuram reported developing ‘self-assembling dual-diameter’ nanopore sensors designed to detect and distinguish disease- and non-disease-associated forms of biomarkers linked to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and ALS, including in complex protein mixtures at very low concentrations. The work was published in Nature Nanotechnology, and was conducted in collaboration with Constructor University (Germany) and CSIR–Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (Kolkata).

Why it matters

If the approach translates into devices, it could enable earlier and more sensitive biomarker-based detection and monitoring for neurodegenerative diseases where conventional detection at low concentrations is difficult.
