Study profiles Stegodyphus sarasinorum venom gland and reports bioactive molecules
Indian researchers published a molecular and functional profile of the venom gland of the colonial spider Stegodyphus sarasinorum in Scientific Reports, using an integrated multi-omics approach (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and Confocal Raman Spectroscopy). The study reports identified proteins and metabolites and found that venom gland extracts showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity against Dalton’s Lymphoma Ascites (DLA) cancer cells in laboratory tests, with the authors noting the work is early-stage and needs extensive validation before clinical use.
It expands India-linked biomedical knowledge by providing a detailed molecular inventory and initial lab evidence that could support future cancer and antimicrobial drug discovery research, subject to further validation.
