Study finds iron- and zinc-fortified pearl millet did not harm toddlers’ gut microbiome

Mumbai, Maharashtra8 Aug 2026

Researchers from Cornell University and Indian partners reported results from a nine-month study among toddlers in Mumbai’s urban slums, finding that iron- and zinc-fortified pearl millet consumed during the study period did not cause detectable harmful changes to the developing gut microbiome. The findings were published in Nature Communications and the millet-based foods were delivered to 20 sites with support from SNDT Women’s University and a Mumbai-based NGO.

Why it matters

The results support a food-based approach to address iron deficiency in early childhood without the gut microbiome disruptions that have been associated with iron supplementation.
