ICMR-NIRW-WH GWAS identifies 21 new gene types linked to endometriosis in Indian women
Mumbai, Maharashtra4 Oct 2026
Researchers at ICMR–National Institute for Research on Women’s Health (NIRW-WH), Mumbai, led a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 2,523 women from across India and reported identifying 21 new gene types associated with endometriosis, in addition to gene types already reported in studies abroad. The study involved participation from 18 government and private medical institutions, including AIIMS Jodhpur (400 participants).
Why it matters
India-specific genetic association findings could support development of earlier diagnostic approaches for endometriosis, which the article says can currently take 3 to 7 years to diagnose.
