Railway Board cleared procurement plan for 238 AC EMU rakes for Mumbai suburban network

Indian Railways said the Railway Board has cleared procurement of 238 sanctioned air-conditioned EMU rakes for Mumbai’s suburban network, using existing RDSO/ICF specifications. The Railway Ministry stated production is scheduled to start in 2027 across ICF Chennai (120), RCF Kapurthala (71) and MCF Raebareli (47), with the full fleet targeted by 2030.
Why it matters
Clearing procurement and standardising specifications is intended to align new rolling stock availability with MUTP-related infrastructure commissioning so new capacity is not underutilised due to lack of trains.
