Maharashtra approved higher scholarship allowances for SC/ST students unable to get hostel seats
The Maharashtra Cabinet approved revised annual allowances under the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Swayam Yojana for Scheduled Tribe students pursuing higher education after Class 12 who could not get admission into government hostels, with payments made via DBT. The revision raises the yearly amount to ₹80,000 (from ₹60,000) for students studying in Mumbai City/Suburban, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and Nagpur; to ₹68,000 (from ₹51,000) for other revenue divisional headquarters and ‘C’ category municipal corporation areas; and to ₹50,000 (from ₹38,000) for other locations; it also adds a one-time annual amount of ₹8,000 for medical/engineering students and ₹4,000 for other streams for educational materials.
Higher allowances can reduce out-of-pocket costs for students who must live away from home because government hostel capacity is insufficient.
