MRVC shifts 238 Mumbai AC local rakes to production at 3 railway factories

Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) decided to drop the tendering route for procuring 238 AC local train rakes for Mumbai and instead have them manufactured in parallel at three existing Indian Railways units: Integral Coach Factory (Chennai), Rail Coach Factory (Kapurthala) and Modern Coach Factory (Raebareli). The article says this approach is intended to accelerate deliveries, with the first AC rake targeted for 2027 and the full fleet expected by 2030.
Why it matters
Using existing production units rather than waiting for bidders to set up new facilities is intended to bring forward the induction of AC suburban trains for Mumbai’s network expansion plans.
