IFC commits $70 million (₹672 crore) to JNPA for shore-power infrastructure

Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra28 Sept 2026

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has committed $70 million (about ₹672 crore) in long-term financing to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) to fund shore-power (cold ironing) infrastructure across its terminals. IFC’s disclosure describes a two-phase rollout over the next two to three years, starting with one container terminal and then extending to remaining terminals.

Why it matters

If implemented as planned, shore power lets ships at berth switch off diesel engines and draw electricity from shore, reducing local air pollution and emissions at India’s busiest container port and providing a financing model other ports could replicate.
