India extends environmental clearance validity for port-related projects to 20 years
21 Sept 2026
India notified an amendment extending the validity of environmental clearances for ports, harbours, breakwaters and dredging projects to 20 years from 10 years, with provisions for two further five-year extensions subject to safeguards. The change applies to future projects and to ongoing projects whose clearances are still valid and are not yet completed.
Why it matters
Longer clearance validity reduces the need to reapply for fresh clearances during long-gestation port projects, lowering procedural delays and improving certainty for developers and financiers.
