NHAI issued guidelines requiring 1-metre boundary walls on upcoming high-speed corridors
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) issued its first-ever guidelines standardising design and safety provisions for high-speed, access-controlled national highways, including prescribing a one-metre-high wall along the outer edge to prevent unauthorised access and stray cattle entry. The guidelines apply to all upcoming four- to six-lane greenfield and brownfield high-speed access-controlled national highways, and also include provisions such as no median openings (with collapsible barriers every 5 km for emergency/maintenance) and additional crash-barrier and signage requirements.
Standardised safety design requirements can reduce cattle intrusions and crash risk on new access-controlled highway corridors built under these guidelines.
