Census 2027 population enumeration advanced in four States; deferred in Manipur

India’s Registrar General and Census Commissioner advanced the Population Enumeration phase of Census 2027 in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa to run from November 16, 2026 to January 4, 2027, ahead of the nationwide schedule planned for February 2027. The Census exercise in Manipur was formally deferred “till further declaration,” according to a notification under the Census Act, 1948.
Why it matters
Changing the enumeration schedule and deferring it in one State affects when updated population data can be collected and used for administration and planning in those areas.
