Foundation laid for Chennai ring main pipeline to interlink nine water treatment facilities

Chennai, Tamil Nadu14 Oct 2026

The foundation stone was laid for a ₹3,108.55-crore ring main (closed circular loop) pipeline project to interlink Chennai’s water sources and treatment facilities for more equitable, uninterrupted drinking water supply in the Greater Chennai Corporation area. Implemented by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board with Asian Development Bank financial assistance, the project includes laying 91.2 km of interconnected pipelines and installing monitoring instruments and SCADA systems at treatment plants and distribution stations.

Why it matters

Interlinking treatment facilities can provide redundancy so disruptions at one source or plant do not halt water supply across parts of Chennai.
