GCC reports 493.83 km of Chennai stormwater drains desilted as of Aug 28, 2026

The Greater Chennai Corporation said it had completed desilting 493.83 km (29.42%) of the 1,671.6-km stormwater drain network taken up through contracts as of August 28, 2026. It reported work under way along 77.29 km (4.62%), with 1,109.2 km (65.94%) yet to be taken up; it also said 2,351 roads and 43,614 machine holes were completed as part of the work.
Why it matters
Desilting stormwater drains and related catch-pit cleaning can improve drainage capacity ahead of the monsoon, reducing waterlogging risk on city roads.
