M. Karunanidhi Ph.D. studentship and postdoctoral research funding set up at Cambridge

Chennai, Tamil Nadu17 Oct 2026

A new M. Karunanidhi Ph.D. Studentship and ongoing funding for postdoctoral research focused on the Dravidian Movement has been established at the University of Cambridge, funded through a £1.3 million contribution by Chennai-based entrepreneur Sabarisan Vedamurthy (with Senthamarai Stalin also named by Cambridge as a benefactor). The funding is stated to support a Ph.D. student for three years of doctoral research, alongside postdoctoral research support.

Why it matters

It creates sustained, dedicated funding for doctoral and postdoctoral research on the Dravidian Movement and related social-justice themes, enabling researchers—especially from disadvantaged backgrounds—to pursue this work at Cambridge.
