Southern Railway sanctioned upgrades for Kumbakonam station ahead of Mahamaham 2028

Southern Railway’s Tiruchirappalli division said Kumbakonam railway station will be upgraded for the 2028 Mahamaham festival, including expanding from four to six lines and platforms, a new station building with a 12-metre air concourse, an additional 6-metre-wide foot overbridge, and a second entry with added passenger facilities. The report says the work has been sanctioned and is expected to begin soon, and the goods shed is proposed to be shifted to Thirunageswaram to ease congestion.
