25 hectares of mangroves planted in Pichavaram, Tamil Nadu
Pichavaram, Tamil Nadu20 Sept 2026
A new 25-hectare mangrove patch has been established along the coast at Pichavaram in Cuddalore district through plantation work carried out by the Forest Department with funding linked to NHAI, at a reported cost of ₹1.97 crore. The effort involved planting over 75,000 Rhizophora apiculata saplings in three identified patches (Vandalmunai, MGR Thittu and Kottumunai).
Why it matters
Expanding mangrove cover strengthens coastal ecosystem services such as shoreline protection and habitat support, while also generating local employment during plantation work.
