CSIR-CCMB developed an India-specific score to predict sickle cell anaemia severity
Hyderabad, Telangana2 Oct 2026
Scientists at CSIR–Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) developed an India-specific disease severity score to better predict how severely sickle cell anaemia may affect Indian patients. The tool was developed using clinical data from India, including analysis of medical records of 171 children (up to 18 years) treated at Government Medical College and Hospital, Nagpur, as reported by The Hindu.
Why it matters
A severity score tailored to Indian clinical profiles could help clinicians identify high-risk patients earlier and make more appropriate treatment and disease-management decisions than existing international scoring systems.
