IIT (BHU) team published green-light activated antibacterial compounds study

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh9 Oct 2026

Scientists at IIT (BHU), Varanasi published a study in Communications Chemistry titled “Green-light-activated Os(II) metallophotoantibiotics for antibacterial therapy and infected wound healing.” The paper reports osmium-based compounds (Os1–Os3) that, when activated by green light, inhibited bacterial growth, disrupted biofilms, and accelerated healing of infected wounds in rat laboratory studies; Os1 reportedly achieved about 85% inhibition of biofilm formation in E. coli and Bacillus subtilis under green-light exposure.

Why it matters

This adds peer-reviewed evidence for a potential light-activated approach to treat drug-resistant infections and biofilm-associated infections, including those linked to medical devices.
