WhatsApp launched in-app bill payments in India via Bharat Connect

WhatsApp launched a native bill payments feature in India, letting users find, manage and pay household and utility bills within the app. The feature is powered by Bharat Connect (BBPS) and the company said it provides access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories, with payments supported via UPI, credit cards and debit cards; it is being rolled out gradually with wider availability expected in the coming weeks.
Why it matters
This adds a new mass-market bill-payment channel inside a widely used app, potentially reducing friction for bill settlement and expanding digital bill payments to more users.
